Ingredients

  • 2 pounds Pizza dough
  • 1 pound Italian sausage
  • 2 cups Shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup Ricotta cheese
  • 0.5 cup Grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 cup Marinara sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Dried oregano
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 1 large Egg
  • 1 tablespoon Water
  • 6 leaves Fresh basil leaves

Directions

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step 2

In a skillet, cook the Italian sausage over medium heat until browned and fully cooked, breaking it into small crumbles as it cooks. Drain excess grease and set aside to cool slightly.

Step 3

In a mixing bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, shredded mozzarella cheese, grated Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper. Mix until evenly combined.

Step 4

On a lightly floured surface, divide the pizza dough into four equal pieces. Roll each piece into a circle about 8 inches in diameter.

Step 5

Spread 2 tablespoons of marinara sauce on one side of each circle, leaving a 1-inch border around the edges. Add a layer of cooked sausage, followed by 1/4 of the cheese mixture, and top with a fresh basil leaf.

Step 6

Fold the dough over the filling to create a half-moon shape. Press the edges firmly together and crimp them with a fork to seal.

Step 7

In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and water to create an egg wash. Brush the tops of each calzone with the egg wash.

Step 8

Using a sharp knife, cut 2-3 small slits on the top of each calzone to allow steam to escape during baking.

Step 9

Place the calzones on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 18-20 minutes, or until golden brown and puffed.

Step 10

Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before serving. Serve warm with extra marinara sauce for dipping.
