Ingredients

  • 8 cups (cubed) day-old bread (French or brioche recommended)
  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1.5 cups granulated sugar
  • 5 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.5 cup raisins (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter (for greasing)
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 0.25 cup whisky
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for sauce)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with 1 tablespoon of butter.

Step 2

Spread the cubed bread evenly in the prepared baking dish. If using raisins, sprinkle them over the bread.

Step 3

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, and ground cinnamon until well combined.

Step 4

Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes. Press the bread down gently with a spatula to ensure it absorbs the liquid. Let it sit for about 10 minutes.

Step 5

Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 45–50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set (a toothpick inserted in the center should come out clean).

Step 6

While the bread pudding is baking, prepare the whisky sauce. In a small saucepan, melt the 0.5 cup of butter over medium heat.

Step 7

Stir in the powdered sugar and water, whisking until smooth. Cook for 1–2 minutes until the mixture thickens slightly.

Step 8

Remove the saucepan from heat and whisk in the whisky and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. If the sauce is too thick, add a little more water to reach your desired consistency.

Step 9

Once the bread pudding is done baking, remove it from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving.

Step 10

To serve, drizzle the warm whisky sauce generously over each portion of bread pudding. Enjoy!
