Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large yellow onion, diced
  • 4 cloves garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound ground Italian sausage
  • 28 ounces canned crushed tomatoes
  • 15 ounces canned tomato sauce
  • 6 ounces canned tomato paste
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 teaspoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 0.5 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the diced onion and sauté for 5-7 minutes, until softened and translucent.

Step 3

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes, until fragrant.

Step 4

Add the ground beef and Italian sausage to the pot. Break up the meat with a spoon and cook until browned and no longer pink, about 8-10 minutes. Drain any excess grease.

Step 5

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, and water. Mix well to combine.

Step 6

Add the sugar, dried basil, dried oregano, red pepper flakes, salt, and black pepper. Stir to evenly distribute the seasonings.

Step 7

Bring the sauce to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover the pot, leaving a small gap for steam to escape, and simmer for 60-90 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.

Step 8

Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning if necessary. Mix in fresh parsley, if desired, before serving.

Step 9

Serve the sauce over cooked spaghetti noodles, or use as a base for lasagna or other Italian-inspired dishes.
