Ingredients

  • 6 medium Yukon Gold potatoes
  • 6 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 0.5 cup Milk
  • 0.25 cup Sour cream
  • 1.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 1.5 pounds Ground beef or lamb
  • 1 medium Yellow onion
  • 2 medium Carrots
  • 1 cup Frozen peas
  • 2 cloves Garlic cloves
  • 2 tablespoons Tomato paste
  • 1.5 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup Beef or chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons All-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon Fresh parsley (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Peel and chop the potatoes into 2-inch chunks. Place them in a large pot of salted water and bring to a boil. Cook for 15-20 minutes or until fork-tender.

Step 2

While potatoes cook, heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef or lamb and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon, about 6-8 minutes. Drain any excess fat.

Step 3

Finely dice the onion and carrots. Mince the garlic cloves.

Step 4

Add diced onions, carrots, and garlic to the skillet with the meat. Cook for 5-6 minutes until softened.

Step 5

Stir in the tomato paste and Worcestershire sauce. Sprinkle the flour over the mixture and stir to combine. Allow to cook for 1 minute to eliminate raw flour taste.

Step 6

Gradually pour in the broth, stirring constantly to create a thick gravy. Add the frozen peas and cook for another 3-4 minutes. Season with 1 teaspoon salt and ½ teaspoon pepper.

Step 7

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 8

When potatoes are tender, drain them and return them to the pot. Add butter, milk, sour cream, ½ teaspoon salt, and ½ teaspoon pepper. Mash until smooth and creamy.

Step 9

Spread the meat mixture into an even layer in a 9x13-inch baking dish. Spoon the mashed potatoes on top, spreading them evenly. Use a fork to create ridges for added texture, which will crisp up in the oven.

Step 10

Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden and the filling is bubbling around the edges.

Step 11

Remove from the oven and let cool for 5-10 minutes. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired. Serve warm!
