Ingredients

  • 500 grams potatoes
  • 150 grams minced chicken or beef
  • 3 medium shallots
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro leaves
  • 2 spring onions
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground white pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 500 milliliters cooking oil

Directions

Step 1

Peel and cut the potatoes into evenly sized pieces. Boil in salted water for about 15 minutes or until tender. Drain and mash the potatoes, then set aside to cool slightly.

Step 2

Finely chop the shallots and garlic.

Step 3

Heat a small amount of oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the shallots and garlic, sauté until fragrant and golden brown. Remove from the heat.

Step 4

In a large mixing bowl, combine the mashed potatoes, minced meat, sautéed shallots and garlic, chopped cilantro, and sliced spring onions.

Step 5

Add the ground white pepper and salt to the mixture and stir until all ingredients are well combined.

Step 6

Shape the mixture into small patties, using about 2 tablespoons of the mixture for each patty. Flatten them slightly.

Step 7

Beat the egg in a small bowl. Dip each patty into the beaten egg to coat both sides.

Step 8

Heat oil in a deep frying pan over medium-high heat. Test by dipping a small piece of the mixture into the oil; if it sizzles, the oil is ready.

Step 9

Carefully place the patties into the hot oil, frying a few at a time to avoid overcrowding. Fry each side for about 3-4 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.

Step 10

Remove the patties with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.

Step 11

Serve the bergedil warm, as an appetizer or as a side dish to complement your main meal.
