Ingredients

  • 1 lb large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup cornstarch
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 2 cups vegetable oil (for frying)
  • 0.5 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp sriracha
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 0.5 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 2 stalks green onions, thinly sliced (for garnish)
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds (for garnish, optional)

Directions

Step 1

In a medium bowl, toss the shrimp with the buttermilk. Allow the shrimp to soak while you prepare the breading and sauce.

Step 2

In a shallow bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.

Step 3

Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or heavy-bottomed pot over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

Step 4

Remove the shrimp from the buttermilk, allowing excess liquid to drip off, then dredge each shrimp in the flour mixture until fully coated. Shake off any excess flour.

Step 5

Fry the shrimp in batches, being careful not to overcrowd the skillet, until golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes per side. Transfer fried shrimp to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.

Step 6

In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, sriracha, honey, and rice vinegar to make the spicy mayo sauce.

Step 7

In a large mixing bowl, toss the fried shrimp with the spicy mayo sauce until evenly coated.

Step 8

Transfer the shrimp to a serving platter and garnish with thinly sliced green onions and sesame seeds, if desired.

Step 9

Serve immediately as an appetizer or over steamed rice for a complete meal.
