In a small saucepan, warm the milk until it is lukewarm (about 110°F or 43°C). Remove from heat and stir in the sugar until dissolved, then sprinkle the active dry yeast over the top. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, melted butter, vanilla extract, and salt.
Add the yeast mixture to the wet ingredients and mix well.
Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, mixing with a wooden spoon or dough hook until a soft dough forms. If using raisins, fold them into the dough at this stage.
Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes, or until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, knead using a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5-7 minutes.
Form the dough into a ball and place it in a greased bowl, turning once to coat the dough. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
Grease a bundt pan or a loaf pan. Punch down the risen dough and shape it to fit into the prepared pan. Cover and let it rise again for another 30-40 minutes, or until it has risen slightly above the edge of the pan.
While the dough is rising, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Bake the babka in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Let the babka cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
