Ingredients

  • 500 g Ground beef
  • 250 g Ground pork
  • 100 g Breadcrumbs
  • 120 ml Whole milk
  • 1 large Egg
  • 2 tbsp Aquavit
  • 1 small, finely chopped White onion
  • 1 clove, minced Garlic
  • 1.5 tsp Salt
  • 0.5 tsp Ground white pepper
  • 0.25 tsp Nutmeg
  • 0.25 tsp Allspice
  • 2 tbsp Unsalted butter
  • 2 tbsp All-purpose flour
  • 500 ml Beef broth
  • 120 ml Heavy cream
  • 1 tbsp Aquavit (for sauce)
  • 2 tbsp, chopped Fresh parsley

Directions

Step 1

In a small bowl, combine breadcrumbs and milk. Let the mixture sit for 5 minutes to allow the breadcrumbs to soak up the milk.

Step 2

In a large bowl, mix the ground beef, ground pork, soaked breadcrumbs, egg, 2 tablespoons of aquavit, onion, garlic, salt, white pepper, nutmeg, and allspice until evenly combined. Be careful not to overmix as this can make the meatballs tough.

Step 3

Using damp hands or a small scoop, form the mixture into approximately 1-inch (2.5 cm) meatballs. Place them on a large plate or baking sheet.

Step 4

Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Working in batches, cook the meatballs for 4-5 minutes, turning occasionally, until browned on all sides. Transfer browned meatballs to a plate and set aside.

Step 5

In the same skillet, melt the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly until golden.

Step 6

Gradually whisk in the beef broth, ensuring there are no lumps. Simmer for 3-4 minutes or until the sauce thickens slightly.

Step 7

Stir in the heavy cream and 1 tablespoon of aquavit. Return the meatballs to the skillet, spooning the sauce over them. Simmer on low heat for 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the meatballs to cook through.

Step 8

Garnish the dish with freshly chopped parsley before serving. Enjoy your Aquavit's Swedish Meatballs with mashed potatoes, lingonberry jam, or egg noodles for a full Scandinavian-inspired experience!
