Ingredients

  • 170 grams unsalted butter
  • 200 grams dark brown sugar, packed
  • 230 grams molasses
  • 1 piece large egg
  • 315 grams all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoons ground cloves
  • 0.5 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 120 milliliters whole milk
  • 120 grams powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk (for glaze)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease or line an 8x8-inch baking dish with parchment paper.

Step 2

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the dark brown sugar and molasses until smooth. Allow the mixture to cool slightly before adding the egg and whisking until fully incorporated.

Step 3

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, ground ginger, ground cinnamon, ground cloves, and sea salt.

Step 4

Gradually pour the wet ingredients into the bowl with the dry ingredients, whisking until the mixture begins to come together. Slowly add the milk, mixing gently to combine into a smooth batter.

Step 5

Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and spread it evenly with a spatula. Tap the dish gently on the counter to remove air bubbles.

Step 6

Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Remove from the oven and let the gingerbread cool in the baking dish for 10-15 minutes.

Step 7

While the gingerbread is cooling, prepare the glaze by mixing the powdered sugar and 2 tablespoons of milk in a small bowl until smooth.

Step 8

Carefully remove the gingerbread from the pan and place it on a wire rack. While the gingerbread is still slightly warm, brush the glaze across the surface using a pastry brush for an even coat.

Step 9

Allow the glaze to set and harden before slicing the gingerbread into squares or rectangles. Serve and enjoy!
