Ingredients

  • 12 ounces fresh cranberries
  • 15 ounces mandarin oranges (canned, in light syrup or juice)
  • 0.5 cups granulated sugar
  • 0.25 cups orange juice (freshly squeezed or store-bought)
  • 0.25 cups water
  • 0.5 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoons ground ginger (optional)
  • 1 teaspoons orange zest (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Rinse the fresh cranberries thoroughly under cold water, discarding any that are bruised or damaged.

Step 2

In a medium-sized saucepan, combine the cranberries, orange juice, water, granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, and ground ginger (if using).

Step 3

Place the saucepan over medium heat and stir gently to dissolve the sugar.

Step 4

Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat to simmer. Cook for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cranberries begin to pop and the sauce thickens.

Step 5

While the cranberries are cooking, drain the canned mandarin oranges and set them aside.

Step 6

Once the cranberry mixture has thickened, remove it from heat and let it cool for 5-10 minutes.

Step 7

Gently fold in the mandarin oranges, being careful not to break them apart.

Step 8

If desired, sprinkle orange zest over the top for added brightness and flavor.

Step 9

Transfer the mixture to a serving bowl and chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours before serving to allow the flavors to meld.

Step 10

Serve chilled as a side dish or a topping for roast turkey, chicken, or pork.
