Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoons salt
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 0.25 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 tablespoons boiling water

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 10-cup bundt pan or 9x13 inch baking dish. Lightly flour the pan to prevent sticking and set aside.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar using a hand or stand mixer until light and fluffy, about 3–4 minutes.

Step 3

Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Then stir in the vanilla extract.

Step 4

In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt.

Step 5

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture alternately with the milk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix just until combined.

Step 6

In a small bowl, combine the cocoa powder and boiling water to create a smooth paste.

Step 7

Transfer about 1/3 of the batter into the bowl with the cocoa paste and mix until fully incorporated, creating the chocolate batter.

Step 8

Pour half of the vanilla batter into the prepared cake pan, followed by small dollops of the chocolate batter. Add the remaining vanilla batter on top and finish with more dollops of the chocolate batter.

Step 9

Using a knife or skewer, gently swirl the two batters together to create a marbled effect, being careful not to overmix.

Step 10

Bake in the preheated oven for 45–50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Step 11

Let the cake cool in the pan for 10–15 minutes before turning it out onto a wire rack to cool completely. Slice and serve!
