Ingredients

  • 1 cup Warm water
  • 1 cup Whole milk
  • 4 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons Granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Active dry yeast
  • 4.5 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 1 large Egg
  • 2 tablespoons Butter (for brushing)

Directions

Step 1

In a small saucepan, combine the milk and butter. Heat over low heat until the butter melts, then turn off the heat and let the mixture cool to lukewarm.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let this sit for 5 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy.

Step 3

Stir the lukewarm milk-and-butter mixture into the yeast mixture.

Step 4

Add the egg, salt, and 2 cups of flour to the mixture. Stir well to combine.

Step 5

Gradually add the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, until the dough becomes soft but no longer sticky. If the dough sticks to your hands too much, sprinkle in a small amount of extra flour.

Step 6

Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until it becomes elastic and smooth.

Step 7

Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let the dough rise in a warm place for 15-20 minutes.

Step 8

Divide the dough into 20 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and place them onto a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet, spaced slightly apart.

Step 9

Cover the rolls loosely with the kitchen towel and allow them to rise for another 15 minutes.

Step 10

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) while the rolls are rising.

Step 11

Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown on top.

Step 12

Remove the rolls from the oven and immediately brush the tops with melted butter for a soft, glossy finish.

Step 13

Serve warm with butter, jam, or your favorite accompaniments. These rolls are best enjoyed fresh but can also be reheated the next day.
