Ingredients

  • 16 oz spaghetti
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 lb ground beef or ground turkey
  • 28 oz crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 0.25 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)
  • 0 grated Parmesan cheese (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil for the spaghetti. Follow the package instructions to cook the spaghetti until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Step 2

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet or saucepan over medium heat.

Step 3

Add the chopped onion to the skillet and sauté for 5-6 minutes, or until softened.

Step 4

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.

Step 5

Add the ground beef or ground turkey to the skillet. Break the meat up with a spoon and cook until browned and fully cooked, about 7-8 minutes. Drain any excess fat, if necessary.

Step 6

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, dried basil, dried oregano, sugar, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Bring the sauce to a simmer.

Step 7

Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer gently for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, to allow the flavors to meld together.

Step 8

Taste and adjust seasonings if needed.

Step 9

Serve the spaghetti onto plates and ladle the sauce generously over the top.

Step 10

Garnish with chopped fresh parsley and grated Parmesan cheese, if desired. Serve immediately.
