Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2.25 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 0.25 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled
  • 1 large egg
  • 1.5 teaspoons salt
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted (for brushing)

Directions

Step 1

In a small bowl, combine the warm water and granulated sugar. Sprinkle the yeast on top and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.

Step 2

In a medium saucepan, warm the milk over low heat until lukewarm. Avoid overheating as this could kill the yeast.

Step 3

In a large mixing bowl, combine the milk, melted butter (ensure it is cooled), the egg, and salt. Stir until well combined.

Step 4

Add the foamy yeast mixture to the wet ingredients and stir gently.

Step 5

Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, mixing after each addition until a soft dough forms.

Step 6

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5-7 minutes.

Step 7

Place the dough in a large, greased bowl and cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap. Allow it to rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.

Step 8

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and shape each piece into a round ball.

Step 9

Place the dough balls onto a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet, leaving space between each roll. Cover loosely and let them rise again for about 30 minutes or until puffy.

Step 10

While the rolls are rising, preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 11

Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes or until golden brown on top.

Step 12

Remove the rolls from the oven and immediately brush them with melted butter for a soft and glossy finish.

Step 13

Serve warm and enjoy! These rolls are best enjoyed fresh, but they can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
