  • 0.5 tsp Salt
  • 100 g Unsweetened applesauce
  • 100 g Sugar
  • 1 tsp Vanilla extract
  • 1 large Egg
  • 50 g Low-fat margarine
  • 150 g Walnuts, chopped
  • 150 g Hazelnuts, chopped
  • 100 g Low-fat margarine (for topping)
  • 100 g Honey
  • 100 g Semisweet chocolate chips

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

Step 3

In a separate bowl, whisk together the applesauce, sugar, vanilla extract, egg, and 50g of margarine until well combined.

Step 4

Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring until a dough forms. Press this dough evenly onto the prepared baking sheet.

Step 5

In a saucepan over low heat, melt 100g of margarine and honey together, stirring until smooth.

Step 6

Stir in the chopped walnuts and hazelnuts, ensuring they are well coated with the honey-margarine mixture.

Step 7

Spread the nut mixture evenly over the dough base on the baking sheet.

Step 8

Bake in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes or until the edges are golden brown.

Step 9

Once baked, remove from the oven and allow it to cool slightly, about 15 minutes.

Step 10

While cooling, melt the chocolate chips in a microwave or double boiler.

Step 11

Using a sharp knife, cut the baked crescent into triangular or rectangular pieces.

Step 12

Drizzle or dip the corners of each piece into the melted chocolate to create signature nut corners.

Step 13

Allow the chocolate to set before serving or storing the Nussecken in an airtight container.
