Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 1 large Yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 4 cloves Garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 pound Ground beef
  • 0.5 pound Italian sausage (mild or spicy, casings removed)
  • 28 ounce Canned crushed tomatoes (28-ounce can)
  • 15 ounce Canned tomato sauce (15-ounce can)
  • 6 ounce Tomato paste (6-ounce can)
  • 0.5 cup Red wine
  • 2 teaspoons Granulated sugar
  • 1.5 teaspoons Dried basil
  • 1.5 teaspoons Dried oregano
  • 0.25 teaspoons Crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons Black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh parsley, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh basil, chopped (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the chopped onion and sauté for 5-7 minutes until softened and translucent.

Step 3

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute, being careful not to let it burn.

Step 4

Add the ground beef and Italian sausage to the skillet. Cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks, about 8-10 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.

Step 5

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, and tomato paste. Mix until well combined.

Step 6

Pour in the red wine and stir to incorporate.

Step 7

Add the sugar, dried basil, oregano, crushed red pepper flakes, salt, and black pepper. Stir to blend all the flavors.

Step 8

Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer uncovered for about 60-90 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.

Step 9

Taste the sauce halfway through the simmering time and adjust seasoning if needed.

Step 10

Just before serving, stir in the fresh parsley and fresh basil (if using).

Step 11

Serve the sauce over your favorite cooked pasta, garnish with additional fresh herbs, and enjoy!
