Ingredients

  • 500 grams Chicken breast (boneless, skinless)
  • 1 cup All-purpose flour
  • 1 cup Cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon Baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 large Egg
  • 1 cup Cold water
  • 4 cups Vegetable oil (for frying)
  • 0.5 cup Brown sugar
  • 0.33 cup Ketchup
  • 0.5 cup Rice vinegar (or white vinegar)
  • 1 tablespoon Soy sauce
  • 0.5 cup Water
  • 1 tablespoon Cornstarch (for sauce)
  • 2 tablespoons Water (for cornstarch slurry)

Directions

Step 1

Cut chicken breast into bite-sized cubes and set aside.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, and salt.

Step 3

Add the egg and cold water to the dry ingredients and mix well until a smooth batter forms.

Step 4

Heat the vegetable oil in a large, deep pot to 375°F (190°C) for frying.

Step 5

Dip the chicken cubes into the batter, ensuring they are well coated.

Step 6

Carefully drop each battered chicken cube into the hot oil, frying in small batches to avoid overcrowding the pot.

Step 7

Fry the chicken balls until golden brown and cooked through, about 4-5 minutes per batch. Remove and drain on paper towels.

Step 8

To prepare the sweet and sour sauce, combine brown sugar, ketchup, rice vinegar, soy sauce, and water in a small saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat.

Step 9

In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of water to create a slurry.

Step 10

Slowly whisk the cornstarch slurry into the boiling sauce and cook until thickened, about 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat.

Step 11

Serve the crispy chicken balls hot with the sweet and sour sauce for dipping or drizzling.
