Ingredients

  • 2.25 teaspoons Active dry yeast
  • 0.25 cups Warm water (110°F)
  • 0.33 cups Sugar
  • 1.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 0.33 cups Unsalted butter, melted and cooled
  • 1 cups Milk, warmed (but not hot)
  • 4 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 large Egg
  • 2 tablespoons Melted butter for brushing

Directions

Step 1

In a small bowl, dissolve the active dry yeast in the warm water (110°F) and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine the sugar, salt, melted butter, and warmed milk. Mix well until the sugar dissolves.

Step 3

Add the yeast mixture to the bowl and stir to combine.

Step 4

Beat the egg lightly in a separate bowl and add it to the wet ingredients.

Step 5

Gradually add the all-purpose flour, 1 cup at a time, mixing with a wooden spoon or dough hook attachment on a stand mixer. Continue until a soft dough forms.

Step 6

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes (or 5-6 minutes with a mixer) until the dough is smooth and elastic. Add a little flour if the dough is too sticky, but avoid using too much.

Step 7

Form the dough into a ball and place it in a greased bowl, turning it once so the top is greased. Cover with plastic wrap or a clean towel and let it rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.

Step 8

Punch down the dough and divide it into 12-16 equal portions, depending on the size of rolls you want.

Step 9

Shape each portion into a ball and place them in a greased baking dish or on a lined baking sheet, leaving a bit of space between them.

Step 10

Cover the rolls loosely with plastic wrap or a damp cloth and refrigerate for up to 24 hours, or let them rise in a warm spot for 30-45 minutes until doubled in size if baking immediately.

Step 11

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the tops of the rolls with melted butter.

Step 12

Bake the rolls for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.

Step 13

Remove from the oven and brush the rolls with additional melted butter while still warm.

Step 14

Serve fresh from the oven, or store in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
