Ingredients

  • 1.75 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.75 cups unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking soda
  • 0.5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoons salt
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 0.5 cups unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1.5 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 1.25 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 0.75 cups heavy cream
  • 0.5 cups powdered sugar

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans, or line them with parchment paper.

Step 2

In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt until well combined.

Step 3

In a large mixing bowl, use an electric mixer to cream the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.

Step 4

Beat in the eggs one at a time, ensuring each is fully incorporated. Add the vanilla extract and mix until combined.

Step 5

Alternately add the dry ingredients and buttermilk to the butter mixture, starting and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix just until combined after each addition.

Step 6

Stir in the hot water until the batter is smooth. The batter will be thin, but this is normal.

Step 7

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.

Step 8

Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then carefully remove the cakes from the pans and let them cool completely on wire racks.

Step 9

To make the fudge frosting, heat the heavy cream in a small saucepan over medium heat until it begins to simmer. Remove from heat and pour the hot cream over the chocolate chips in a heatproof bowl.

Step 10

Let the mixture sit for 2 minutes, then whisk until smooth and glossy. Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature, then whisk in the powdered sugar until thickened and spreadable.

Step 11

Once the cakes are completely cool, place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a generous amount of the fudge frosting over the top.

Step 12

Place the second cake layer on top and spread the remaining frosting evenly over the top and sides of the cake.

Step 13

Chill the cake in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to set the frosting. Let it sit at room temperature for 10 minutes before serving.
