Ingredients

  • 2 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon Baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon Granulated sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 cup Unsalted butter (chilled and cubed)
  • 0.75 cup Cold milk (whole or 2%)
  • 2 tablespoons Butter (melted, for brushing)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt until well combined.

Step 3

Add the chilled, cubed unsalted butter to the dry ingredients. Using a pastry cutter or your fingertips, work the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized pieces of butter remaining.

Step 4

Slowly pour the cold milk into the mixture, stirring gently with a wooden spoon or spatula until the dough just comes together. Be careful not to overmix.

Step 5

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Gently pat the dough into a rectangle about 1-inch thick. Fold the rectangle in half, turn it 90 degrees, and repeat this process 3-4 times to create layers, taking care not to overwork the dough.

Step 6

Using a floured biscuit cutter or the rim of a glass, cut out biscuits and place them on the prepared baking sheet. Gather any scraps, reshape, and cut again until all the dough is used.

Step 7

Brush the tops of the biscuits with melted butter to encourage browning in the oven.

Step 8

Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and the biscuits have risen beautifully.

Step 9

Remove from the oven and allow the biscuits to cool slightly before serving warm. Serve with butter, jam, or honey as desired.
