Ingredients

  • 24 pieces Wonton wrappers
  • 0.5 pounds Ground beef
  • 4 ounces Cream cheese
  • 0.5 cups Shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 piece Jalapeño, finely diced
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon Chili powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt
  • 4 cups Vegetable oil (for frying)
  • 0.5 cups Salsa (for dipping)
  • 0.25 cups Water (for sealing wontons)

Directions

Step 1

In a skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef until browned, breaking it into small pieces as it cooks. Drain any excess fat from the pan.

Step 2

Reduce the heat to medium and add the diced jalapeño, ground cumin, chili powder, and salt to the skillet with the beef. Cook for 2-3 minutes until the spices are fragrant and the jalapeño is softened. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.

Step 3

In a mixing bowl, combine the cooked ground beef mixture with cream cheese and shredded cheddar cheese. Mix well until the filling is creamy and fully combined.

Step 4

Set up a small workstation with the wonton wrappers, a small bowl of water, and the prepared filling. Lay one wonton wrapper on a clean, flat surface.

Step 5

Scoop about 1 teaspoon of the filling into the center of the wonton wrapper. Dip your finger into the water and moisten the edges of the wrapper.

Step 6

Fold the wrapper in half diagonally to form a triangle, pressing the edges firmly to seal. You can also pleat or crimp the edges decoratively if desired. Repeat with the remaining wrappers and filling.

Step 7

In a deep skillet or saucepan, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat to 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer to ensure the oil stays at the right temperature.

Step 8

Carefully add the wontons to the hot oil in small batches, being sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy.

Step 9

Use a slotted spoon to remove the wontons from the oil and transfer them to a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil.

Step 10

Serve warm with salsa on the side for dipping. Enjoy your Tex-Mex-inspired crispy wontons!
