Ingredients

  • 1.75 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.75 cups unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking soda
  • 0.5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoons salt
  • 0.5 cups unsalted butter, softened
  • 1.75 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 units large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cups buttermilk
  • 1 cups boiling water
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 0.5 cups unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 2 teaspoons orange zest
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract (for frosting)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

Step 2

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.

Step 3

In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in the vanilla extract.

Step 4

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture in three additions, alternating with the buttermilk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.

Step 5

Slowly pour the boiling water into the batter, mixing on low speed. The batter will be thin, but this is normal.

Step 6

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and smooth the tops with a spatula.

Step 7

Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Step 8

Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn them out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 9

To make the frosting, beat the cream cheese and softened butter together in a medium bowl until smooth and creamy.

Step 10

Gradually add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, beating on low until incorporated. Increase speed to medium-high and mix until fluffy.

Step 11

Add the orange juice, orange zest, and vanilla extract, and continue beating until smooth and spreadable.

Step 12

Once the cakes are completely cool, place one cake layer on a serving platter. Spread a thick layer of frosting on top.

Step 13

Place the second cake layer on top and spread the remaining frosting over the top and sides of the cake.

Step 14

Garnish with additional orange zest or chocolate shavings, if desired. Slice and serve!
